Shaman King Zero Volume 1 came in 9th place! With 71,852 sales!

Putting things in perspective… that’s just above what the highest selling KZBs did on their first week. So.. the numbers are pretty good. Next week will be the true telling. The KZBs I think only broke the top 20 in sales two or three weeks in a row (often meaning they needed to sell more than 20,000 copies). If SKZ falls under 20,000 copies next week, that would be slightly disappointing for the series. But we shall see… and we are off to a good start!

The JumpX website has been updated with some new things!

 The poster that comes with the Jump X issue is now shown. They put alot of effort into it. And by alot, I mean very little. Quite disappointed.

The most important part of this ad is… the left hand side is a new color image! Maybe for tomorrow’s chapter?

There is also going to be a contest on Twitter to get these keychains. Maybe Dit will translate the exact details.

Shamans that link this world to the other. Could finally get a copy of both SKZ0 and Kai2! The chapter was great, even better than the 1st one :’D
The magazine came with a Yoh postcard (the blue one) and the volume came with a Yoh postcard (the green one), a random bookmark (you could also get Patch Anna or Yohane) and my favorite one… a really cool Yoh/Hana flyer signed by Takei!

About what’s inside of the volume… only the 5 chapters we already know and also a little extra about Takei’s trip to Shimane, Izumo. It’s not a manga, but still pretty interesting! ^^ Also look how many Yohs! I think there were almost 200 copies in there.

Continue reading »]]> So… you probably noticed that there website was a little less fancy the last month or so. Well somethings broke when doing some updates. Luckily when I did some updates today… it fixed them! That saves me alot of time and work.

I like it when things work out nicely like that.

As such, I have updated the rotator with some new images. Can you identify where the images are from? The true set of obscure Takei/Shaman King trivia awaits you…Feel free to post your answers in the comments section.

And the cover for Shaman King Zero Volume 1 is released. Yes, it’s still volume 1. There is even the number 1 on the cover. So… there must be a volume 2 at some point! The volume is being released on May 10th in Japan for ￥ 590 and it’s 196 pages. So it will contain the 5 (or 6) chapters of Shaman King Zero already released.

But what will be in volume 2…? Here’s my thoughts. Takei is actually playing it safe. Just in case Shaman King Flowers bombs, he could just go back to “Shaman King Zero” and write a oneshot with the original characters. He could also use this to his advantage for telling the Flowers story. Need to fill in a backstory? Take a month off from writing Shaman King Flowers and make a new chapter for Shaman King Zero. It’s an interesting way of releasing two “series” at once, but really having one “core” and one “supplemental.”

Also, more importantly… Jumbor volume 4 comes out on June 4th!! Woo!

Continue reading »]]> There’s not much to say yet about it, but it seems that something called the “Takei Festival” will take place in June. The reason is that all three magazines publishing his works (Ultra Jump, Jump Kai and Jump SQ.) will have Jumbor, Flowers and Ultimo covers respectively. So this “Takei Festival” will be held as a celebration of June being the first time he gets to draw 3 magazine covers.

It may sound like an actual event or party, but it’s not. As the ad says, this “Takei Festival” is a “series of exciting plans” the three magazines are working together on.

Any idea of what it could be?
I’ll just say: Just make a damn new SK anime already!

A huge update today for Shaman King Zero and Flowers update today. You can follow along by going here: http://jumpx.jp/w/mankin/special.html . There is a HUGE update to the cast list so let’s start with the “easy” stuff. All of these images were already released with the Zero chapter 4 and in various other ads:

There are only 2 names that are released. That’s “Hana Asakura” and the new “Anna” character. However, there is some confusion on what her name actually is! So taking a look at the image face value, you see that it says “Anna.” However digging deeper into the tooltip for the image you will find… “Itako no annna the 3rd 三代目イタコのアンナ” Notice how there is 3 “n” in here name! It’s probably a special spelling Takei will be using for “Annna” when writing her name in English. It’s not the same as the Japanese either. But in the plot summery for her, she is listed as Silva’s daughter (from the Patch tribe) and will be Anna’s first disciple. The other two “unknowns” have the generic text of “優しそうな少年” and “妖しい眼差しの女の子”. Neither of which really say anything.

Moving down the page… we see the new “Ren” character. (OMFG STOP CALLING HIM THIS! ~Jezzy) He is classified as “Another one of the Asakura’s” (彼はもう一つの麻倉). Clearly labeled as the villain of the new story… but he’s using one of Hao’s symbols as an eyepatch!? I think we know who he is following… We’ll probably get a better image of him in the fifth Zero chapter.

The story is still a little rough, but it appears that this “Another one of the Asakura’s” appears before Hana who is preparing for the next Shaman Fight in 2500.

Finally at the bottom we get a spread of the characters that will be in at least the first new chapter of Shaman King Flowers.They are Tamao, Manta, Ryu, and Horohoro! So we shall see where this goes. But, we might not see these characters for a while since the characters in this section might not always appear in the chapter.

Also from ComicSoul’s post… here’s a better shot of the female “Unknown” with a better look at her spirit:

And ComicSoul also caught this interesting thing… an ad where it calls it  “Shaman King 2 Flowers” (シャーマンキング2FLOWERS). That’s interesting… We’ll see if that’s the case or not soon…

Update 4/1:

This is no April Fools joke, here’s the covers for the Jump Kai issue! On the left is the actual cover for Jump X (click to enlarge!). Personally, I think it was a good choice to go with that cover. Maybe a little less text, but still looks good (Hao was better though). Then there is a full book insert for JumpX+ (Or Jump Kai Plus). This will contain the “Shaman King Flowers Zero Story.” Now there are 2 things that help point us to what that actually is. It’s very, very likely the original “Shaman King Flowers Hana’s Epoch Chapter 1″ from the Shaman King Mentalite book. Firstly, the logo is the exact same as it was when that was published, which was different than the current Flowers logo (which doesn’t have the Hana’s Epoch subtitle). Secondly, it is 45 pages. The original Shaman King Flowers Hana’s Epoch chapter? That was 45 pages. Also that was still using the “old” Shaman King logo, which hasn’t been used in a while. Kinda nice to see it again, but it might be the last. Also over at Comicsoul they have a couple other pics of ads… which shows off Anna/Annna a bit more. She almost looks too nice. Like Tamao nice rather than true “Anna style.”

Here’s a little translation of the news… Sorry for the waiting!

I must admit that this whole “new Asakura” thing scares the hell out of me. If he turns out to be Hao’s secret son or something I’ll look for Takei and punch him on the face

Hana: The son of Yoh Asakura and Anna Kyoyama, the main character and the heroine of “Shaman King.” Due to financial difficulties at his home, Funbari Onsen, he is burdened with the crushing pressure of rebuilding the business. At his 13s he worries about how society and himself are doing. He is known to have shamanic skills that surpass by far those of his father Yoh, but since the next S.F. will take place in the year 2500 he feels like he doesn’t know what to do with his powers.

Anna: A mysterious girl that appears before Hana. According to the official character book “Mentalité” she is Silva’s daughter and Anna the 1st’s best disciple, but…

Secret character 1: A kind-looking boy.

Secret character 2: A girl with suspicious eyes.

Secret character 3: According to mr. Takei “he is another Asakura” with wicked skills that may even overwhelm those of the main character… There’s no doubt that he will be Hana’s first “enemy.”

Plot summary.

Finally, the new “Mankin” awakens!!!!
The story takes place in Funbari ga Oka (Nishitokyo city, Tokyo prefecture) 14 years after the Shaman Fight that held so many epic battles. Hana Asakura, who is now 13 years old, grew up protected by Ryu, Horohoro, Amidamaru and other people including the rest of legendary warriors. He leads a life in which he can’t make use of his explosive talent and therefore feels down about it… but then a boy said to be “another Asakura” with a “wicked” power appears before him!!!? Not only the distinguished Asakura family, but the whole world will get involved in this splendid story that is about to start!!!

“Don’t miss the manga that will overturn the former “Mankin World” you all know with its new story, outstanding characters and features!!!” (Inakichi, supervisor)

Yoh Junior’s (lol at this) adventure will be an action drama about self improvement!!
- The first chapter of Flowers will be released on 4/10 just as planed.

As I already said, this is a pretty badass first chapter!! It really is much better than what I was expecting, since usually first chapters are never as good as the following ones. Another thing I liked is that this is kind of a different Flowers, I don’t know why, but it feels different (more like Mankin). Hana’s still impulsive and all that, but he doesn’t act as spoiled as in the oneshot. He’s less emo too… which I appreciate! Before reading it I was a bit scared about the plot, but with such a touching first chapter I’m really looking forward to the next ones!! And I hope you do too ^^

Well now, Sentinel has gone and changed the model.
AmiAmi, a site that is both a reputable dealer of figures and blogs about figures, posted pictures on both their website and facebook that were taken at the Miyazawa Models Spring Exhibition that took place this past weekend. I was bored so I clicked on the gallery, only to find this:

He’s unpainted again, and unaccompanied by the oversoul. Now, I wouldn’t say this means that it’s been scratched from the model altogether, nor that the absence of Hao means he’s been canceled (they’re probably just concentrating on making Yoh presentable for right now). But look at the details in his hair and face. He no longer looks stiff, though I can’t say the same for his pants, which I think look a tad awkward.

This is the only picture I’ve been able to find so far. Once I find it, I’ll update this post again.

Continue reading »]]> So my old computer “died” earlier this week. And by died, I mean, it needed Windows to be reinstalled, which I would have to re-install all of my software again. So I figured, meh, might as well get around to getting a new computer. (Don’t worry, all of my files are still safe)

My old computer was silver in color, and every computer needed a name, so I called it silver. It was also called this since I wanted a sort of Takei name. And I didn’t want to call it “Silva” since that would be kind of silly.

I also have a laptop, which I have named “Kunpo.” I thought it was more fitting to name it after Jumbor, since I like Jumbor. Since a laptop was something you hold more in your hands, it seemed like a perfect match.

Now for my new computer’s name. It’s name is “Kurobina.” It’s a nice big black tower PC. And I was thinking… “Hmm… is there something in Shaman King similar to that…” and the first thing that came to mind was Hao’s Kurobina!

Now that this new computer has 3 hard drives in it, maybe I should rename them to make sence! I’m thinking about naming that in order of how old the files are on them, based on the main characters names from Takei’s series. So my oldest hard drive would be named “Senju.”

Now the question passes onto you! Do any of you name your computers (or anything else) after some Takei series?

Continue reading »]]> Here’s the first part of the guide that I promised! This covers the basics of anime figure collecting, such as what they are, how they’re made, and the different types. I’m mostly done with the next part which I know is what everyone actually wants – HOW TO SPEND YOUR MONIES ON EXPENSIVE PIECES OF PLASTIC! HURRAH!

But for now, let’s preface with the basics…after the jump.

These were probably the best figures we got back in the day. We deserve so much better

Figure Collecting Part 1: The Basics

What are figures? Why do they exist?
Figures, anime ones in this case, are sculpted statuettes of characters from various series, video games, manga, and well-known illustrations. They are usually scaled, meaning that it is only a fraction of the actual perceived height of the character. Figures are most often ⅛, 1/7 and ⅙ scale, meaning that if you stacked 8, 7, or 6 figures on top of each other respectively, they would be the actual size of the character. That said, most figures are only about 7-9in (18-23cm) tall.

As for why they exist…well, some just like having their favorite characters on display, or they just find the figure itself beautiful or handsome and want it for themselves. Some keep the figure in its box while displaying it, which, depending on the box, can make it hard to see, and some take the figure out and let it sit or put it behind glass. Either way, opening the figure makes it slightly less valuable if you try to resell it. The other reason they exist? PEOPLE BUY THEM! Companies don’t really make squat by simply airing anime on TV; figures are one of the fastest and most reliable ways for a company to make money off of a license. The thing is, not only one figure of a character is usually made – over 240 figures of Ayanami Rei from Neon Genesis Evangelion have been made since the series was created, an average of 15 each year. With dozens of companies, there is an immense potential for profit.

What are figures usually made out of?
Polyvinyl chloride, commonly known as PVC, is usually the go-to material for figures. It’s cheap, durable, and easy to build with. You can make anything from clothes to hoses to roofing to flooring to waterbeds.

Wait…isn’t PVC toxic?! Why are you telling us to buy something that could kill us?!
Darn, you discovered my diabolical plan to kill off people who bug us about updates!
No, seriously though, while it’s true that PVC can be toxic, as long as all your furniture, walls, and carpeting aren’t made out of 100% PVC, and you’re not sniffling, licking, or making out with your figures everyday, you’ll be fine. There’s a gentleman on a website who has thousands, and he’s still alive and kicking!

"I'm not dead yet!"

What about other materials?
Some other materials include resin and polystone. Every now and then you’ll have a company who’s being all fancy and making a figure out of gold or diamonds, but those cover the most common types of materials. Having a figure made of resin or polystone usually make them much more expensive, and have a higher chance of being broken. If a method called “cold cast” is used (wherein the material does not use heat in order to make the figure, and an accelerator is usually added to the liquid plastic in order to hasten the process), the figure will be EXTREMELY brittle and much more likely to break. I stress that you should use caution when deciding to buy a cold cast figure. They’re super expensive, and they may not even arrive in one piece!

How is figure formed?
Here’s a site that can explain it in brief and also offers a series of videos about how anime figures are made. Yes, they’re all in Japanese with no subtitles, but you can get the basic idea if you’re actually curious. It’s pretty interesting.

What’s a garage kit?
Garage kits are basically the doujinshi of the figure world. Small, unofficial groups sculpt their own figures, which they then usually sell at conventions like Wonder Festival. They are almost always sold unpainted and unassembled, so you need to either do it yourself or commission someone else to do it for you.
These can be an awesome way for more under appreciated anime series to be recognized, but the downside if that because it’s made by an indie group, very few are made. On average, only 20 kits are made, if even that. If the group is lucky and the sculpt is really good, a major figure company may pick it up and release a prepainted PVC version.

Even major companies sometimes do garage kits. In fact, Volks, who made this Shaman King figure that is both Andy’s and my holy grail, produced this as a garage kit. That’s right, after paying $400 for this, you have to paint it yourself! Yay! Not to mention that even those are sold in limited quantities. Only 100 of those figures exist!

What does it mean when a figure is limited? Exclusive? Made-to-order? Prize?
Each of these classifications is considered a “run”. Most figures have a “standard run,” that is, they are sold in most stores that would sell anime figures, and you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting it via preorder or buying it if there are any leftovers. More often than not, a standard run is only produced once. When the figure sells out, that’s it – good luck with the second hand market. Occasionally figures are re-released, but I’ve noticed that only bigger companies such as Alter and Kotobukiya reprint figures. In the case of the RIO:bones, we don’t know much about Sentinel, the company that produces them, so we can’t say if they will be a company that does re-releases. Better to be safe than sorry, and preorder when you can.

A “limited” figure only has a certain number that are made. The Yoh figure mentioned above was only limited to 100 pieces as I said. These figures are almost never re-released (I say “almost” because knowing the crazy world of figures, it’s probably happened at some point), so expect the price to skyrocket if you’re not lucky enough to initially buy it. These figures may or may not be sold in regular stores.

An “exclusive” figure can only be obtained from a certain source. Many times, figure shops will offer a figure that was made only for them to sell. For instance, AmiAmi sometimes sells figures that no other figure stores have. They are special figures that the company made for only AmiAmi to sell. The only way you can get one of these figures otherwise is through a proxy service, a figure shop that sells figures from all different runs, or second hand. These figures are not necessarily limited, but limited and exclusive often do go hand-in-hand. Another way to get an exclusive figure is through a mail order from a magazine. The magazine Hobby Japan often partners with top-tier figure companies to offer exclusive figures. There is usually a coupon that comes in the magazine, and you send it in to reserve your figure. Whether or not you pay at the time of order or when it is in stock is different based on who you’re ordering from. I personally find that these figures are of wonderful quality, and have a couple of regrets over not getting some. Another way to get smaller figures with magazines is to simply have them come with wrapped with the magazine itself. Manga and guidebooks also couple figures in special cases.

Made-to-order means just what it sounds like: you order a figure, and the number of figures that are ordered are made, no more (and hopefully no less). These usually come directly from the company themselves. A recent example is the Snow Miku nendoroid due out in June. The preorder was only open for 10 days, then closed. Nothing was sold out, it’s just that no more orders would be taken. There will be no extra stock because only the number of figures that have been ordered will be made. Chances of this being re-released are slim to none.

A “prize” figure is obtained by playing a lottery game in Japan, either that, or it is a prize in a crane game. These cannot usually be found in stores, only stores such as Hobby Link Japan and Big In Japan who cover multiple runs of figures.

A huge update today for Shaman King Zero and Flowers update today. First up we have a couple previews of the cover. It’s Hao! Age is a bit hard to peg down. But to me it looks more like KZB Hao than Flowers. And certainly not Zero version. Plus you have the GS in the background. Probably one of the best covers Takei has done for any magazine cover.

For characters, both Chocolove and Hao are now added with Yoh and Anna. I bet both will be sharing the chapter, but it should be more focused on Chocolove. Anna is still listed as a main character, but she hasn’t shown up yet. But then again, neither has Yoh since the first chapter… so… who knows. Anyways, here’s a better shot of Hao from the official website:

I was sure that there was going to be a Hao oneshot, but I could never have imagined it to be something like this :3 I loled so much at this chapter, poor Chocolove.　Btw how much does Hao weight now, 35 kg? o_ó I kind of miss the six pack he used to have…
